The Minister of Health, Ussene Isse, led a mission to the United States of America from 20 to 23 July 2026, aimed at consolidating international health partnerships and mobilising technical, institutional and financial support to strengthen the National Health System.
The mission followed on from commitments made during the Sun Valley Summit held in January this year, and one of its priorities was to continue the strategic dialogue with international partners, with particular attention to strengthening the future Gorongosa Regional Hospital.
During the visit, the Mozambican delegation met social, health and research institutions, notably the University of Pittsburgh, a partner in the Gorongosa Restoration Project. The parties are working to conclude negotiations to establish a scientific research partnership, with a focus on a possible twinning with Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM).
One of the highlights of the mission was the donation of hospital equipment comprising 75 beds and 75 mattresses to the Gorongosa Health Centre in Sofala Province. The goods were handed over to the Ministry of Health to strengthen inpatient capacity and improve care, accommodation and treatment conditions for patients.
On the occasion, the Minister of Health undertook to ensure, through the competent structures, the proper allocation, registration, conservation and use of the equipment, so that it effectively contributes to improving health service delivery and strengthening institutional cooperation for the benefit of the Mozambican people.
The mission also included contacts with Global Links, an organisation working to improve access to health care and to establish partnerships with service providers, which made available medical supplies including blood pressure monitors and stethoscopes, among other equipment.
In Washington, the Minister of Health also held working meetings with representatives of the World Bank and the United States Department of State, assessing opportunities to mobilise financial resources to strengthen the health system. With the World Bank, discussions focused on financing local medicine production, while with the Department of State the talks addressed the implementation of the Medical Device Ecosystem (MdE) Implementation Plan, including financing for the Gorongosa District Hospital under the One Health approach.
